Sirmaur district
Sirmaur district is located in the outer Himalayas which are generally known as the Shivalik range. It has a beautiful bracing climate, landscapes, and legendary temples which hold enduring attraction for the tourists. It is a triangle of 3 important tourist places namely Renuka, Nahan, and Paonta Sahib. Nahan is the district headquarters of Sirmaur. Sirmaur connects the hills of Uttar Pradesh to the hills of Himachal.
The Giri River is the biggest river in the district. It originates from Jubbal/Kotkhai and flows to south-east direction. Many tributaries join Giri River; important of them is Jalal River. Jalal River originates from Dharthi range near Pachhad and joins the river at Dadahu from the right side.
Places of Visit:
- Nahan: Nahan was founded in 1621 A.D. by Raja Karna Prakash. It has stunning green forests and valleys, especially in Choordhar peak.
- Jagannath Temple: Jagannath temple was built in 1681 A.D by Raja Budh Prakash. The festival of ‘Sawan Dwadashi’ is celebrated annually at the temple making the end of the Monsoon. Idols of Fifty two local gods are carried in procession to Jagannath temple. They are floated in a pool and are restored at midnight to their niches ceremoniously.
- Shivalik Fossil Park Saketi: In Asia, the park is the first of its kind to be developed at the actual site where fossils were discovered. The other major attraction is the Museum which contains various models, fossils, charts, and paintings. That relates to the various aspects of plants and animals life of the past and present in Shiwalik range.
- Trilokpur Temple: The temple of the goddess ‘Mahamaya Bala Sundri’ is quite popular. It attracts lakhs of pilgrims from all over Northern India, especially from Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. A fair is held twice a year when a large number of devotees visit this temple and pay their respect to the goddess.
- Dhaula Kuan: It is 20kms from Nahan on the road to Paonta Sahib. It is a worth seeing stop. You can see a sprawling orchard consisting of citrus plants and mangoes. Also see the fruit canning factory of various kinds of juices, jams, pickles, and canned fruits.
- Giri Nagar: It is located at a distance of 7 km from Dhaula Kuan. The town has a powerhouse (60 MW) capacity constructed after diverting the Giri River through a 6 km tunnel.
